The Critical AI Literacy project addresses the need to train students to use generative artificial intelligence (Gen AI) wisely, critically and ethically in their studies and to transfer these skills to their professional and civic lives.

The Critical AI Literacy project addresses the need to train students to use generative artificial intelligence (Gen AI) wisely, critically and ethically in their studies and to transfer these skills to their professional and civic lives.

The project consists in developing and implementing an innovative course called «Using generative AI for Learning in Higher Education» that is short, flexible, online, multilingual and adaptive. The scientific work will be carried out in collaboration with experts from Swiss and French universities and high schools, in addition to the project partners. The expected outcome is a permanent course, integrated into the institutions' digital skills training offer, which forms students in the efficient, but also critical, use of Gen AI, in their studies and beyond.

The target audience for this project includes UniDistance Suisse students, doctoral students at Cadi Ayyad University in Marrakech, Morocco (UCA), as well as students from other universities. The CAILL course is already available in French on the Kaïros platform of UniDistance Suisse (German and English translations in progress).

The study day ‘Generative AI skills for learning’ on June 8th, 2026, aims to take stock of existing measures in higher education and stimulate reflection in secondary and tertiary education institutions. Through the combined perspectives of teachers, students and institutional leaders, we will explore the resources offered to students, the programs that have been put in place, and the recognition given to this learning.

This project is based on a collaboration between the Educational Development Unit in Distance Learning (EDUDL+) at UniDistance Suisse, the Centre for Pedagogical Innovation (CIP) and the Department of Computer Science at the Faculty of Sciences at UCA.
