Probability Theory
Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science
Prof. Dr. David Belius is a mathematician and assistant professor in the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science at UniDistance Suisse since August 2023. He obtained his bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Cambridge (UK) and went on to complete his doctorate at ETH Zurich. He then spent time at the Centre de Recherches Mathématiques in Montreal and the Department of Mathematics at McGill, the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University and the University of Zurich. Between 2018 and 2023, he was an SNSF professor at the University of Basel. His field of research is probability theory and related areas, especially the theory of spin glasses from statistical physics and modern machine learning theory.
I am looking to hire a PhD student in probability theory, and more specifically (mathematical) statistical physics. Candidates should have (or be close to completing) a master's degree in mathematics, theoretical physics, theoretical computer science or similar. The focus will be on spin glasses, but no prior knowledge of this area is required. The preferred start date is 1 September 2026 (or earlier), but a start at any time between now and 1 September 2027 is possible. Please contact me if you are interested.
