This new law serves a dual purpose: it transforms the distance learning university UniDistance Suisse into an autonomous cantonal institution called “Uni Valais-Wallis”, while advancing an ambitious academic strategy in the field of university-level distance education. By establishing a cantonal university, Valais ensures its full inte-gration into the Swiss higher education system.
The LUVa transfers to UniDistance Suisse the tasks of education, research, and community service that are the responsibility of every university, while guaranteeing its independence, its regional roots, and the neces-sary accountability to the canton of Valais. With high-quality university education based on scientific principles, pedagogical innovation, and flexibility, the University of Valais aims to meet the requirements of lifelong learn-ing.
The future status of the University of Valais-Wallis corresponds to that already in place in most Swiss university cantons.
The draft law has been submitted to the Grand Council for consideration by the end of 2025. The LUVa is scheduled to come into force in 2028, subject to a positive accreditation decision as a university. This decision is to be made by the Swiss Accreditation Council in spring 2027.
