Nothing works on its own: Why learning depends on how cognition, motivation, and metacognition get along

Does self-testing help us retain information? Do we learn more when educational videos are entertaining? Educational psychology has been exploring questions like these for decades, and the most accurate answer is almost always the same: nothing works on its own. In his inaugural lecture, Prof. Dr Tino Endres will explain why this seemingly frustrating answer is precisely what makes research on learning so fascinating. Whether self-testing is effective depends on how the material was previously studied and how motivated learners are. Whether an engaging video helps learners focus or distracts them depends on how appealing the alternatives are. Drawing on findings from his research, he will demonstrate how cognitive, motivational and metacognitive processes interact and influence one another during learning. These insights have important implications for the design of learning materials and the support provided to students, particularly in distance education, where learners are largely responsible for managing their own learning.

Tino Endres is Associate Professor of Educational Psychology at the Faculty of Psychology at UniDistance Suisse. He holds the Chair of Educational Psychology and is Co-Director of the LIFT Research Centre for Learning & Instruction with Future Technologies. His research focuses on the interplay between cognitive, motivational and metacognitive processes in learning.
