Choice and usage

  • Use media created for the institution, that is coherent with the tone and the graphic charter of the institution.
  • No external material: it may feel disconnected with the institutional identity.
  • No stock material: users will ignore it.
  • Use media if they add valuable information to written content.

Photos

  • Avoid text on images.
  • Use images of less than 800 KB.
  • Give a realistic image of students and staff as much as possible.
    • Give space to people with special needs and to different ethnicities represented at the institution.
    • Vary photo subjects.

Videos

  • Add a subheading and/or an introductory paragraph to any video (the YouTube label might not be visible).
  • Offer subtitles for users who may not be able to hear your content (because of a disability or of their current circumstances). Alternatively, provide a transcript.
    • Offer subtitles in all 3 languages for any video.

Graphs and illustrations

Add a subheading and/or an introductory paragraph to graphs and illustrations.

Icons

  • Use icons from the Bootstrap library. Do not use emojis.
  • Use icons within callouts, illustrations, and buttons.

Alt text

  • Use alternative text (alt text) to describe any static media for people that use screen readers or have connectivity issues.
    • Add more details depending on the complexity of the image (e.g. include the data showed in graphs).
  • If you use captions, provide different content with alternative text.
