Beyond protecting work domestically, transnationally and globally, this research project aims to project suggests looking into an innovative way at how to reduce the need to work worldwide, by designing a right towards more freedom from work.
According to the International Labor Organization, global unemployment has reached 192 million people worldwide in 2018. Even among those who have a job, vulnerable forms of employment are expected to account for 1.4 billion people. Is the contemporary economic system suitable to fulfil simultaneously the economic human rights to work and to just conditions of work? Beyond contemporary discussions in "Business and Human Rights" that aims at designing human rights obligations for corporations in the global economy, the "Human Economy" project suggests looking in an innovative way at how to reduce the need to work worldwide. It is called "Human Economy" because it challenges the idea that human beings are merely a form of productive capital under the concept of ‘human capital’, a concept that makes people maybe work unnecessarily. This project is an in-depth development of the first published article on the Human Economy "From the Right to Work to Freedom from Work: Introduction to the Human Economy" (International Association of Labour Law Journals Award 2017).
