UniDistance Suisse offers fully online university degree programmes and is accredited under the Swiss Higher Education Act (HEdA). It combines flexible, location‑independent part‑time distance learning with an active, interdisciplinary research culture on its campus in Brig. Across five faculties – Law, Psychology, Economics, History, and Mathematics & Computer Science – we have been shaping modern teaching, learning and research for more than 30 years. Today, UniDistance Suisse counts over 2,700 students and around 550 staff members.
To strengthen and further develop its research competencies in educational technologies in distance learning settings, the Center for Holistic Learning Experiences (CHLX) is looking for a:
PhD researcher in Computer Science – Effortful Learning with Generative AI (100 %)
Place of work: Brig, partial remote working possible (within Switzerland)
Start of work: Upon agreement
Contract duration: 1 year, with 2 years extension
Human learning is a complex process that involves diverse resources, processes, and varies for each individual. At the Center for Holistic Learning Experiences (CHLX), we tackle this complexity by designing, developing, and evaluating holistic and effective learning experiences.
In this specific project, you will explore how friction can be used as a strong design concept to create effective learning experiences using Generative AI. Indeed, deep human learning typically happens in two steps: First, a moment of difficulty or friction, then a moment of resolution. In contrast, current Generative AI tools typically offer a friction-less experience, thus only supporting superficial human learning.
In this project, you will explore, implement, and evaluate AI-powered learning tools including different types of friction to support deep learning of mathematics while sustaining motivation and improving learners’ learning processes.
