Matthias Voigt a étudié les mathématiques à l'université de technologie de Chemnitz de 2004 à 2010. Pendant cette période, il a passé du temps à l'Institut d'aviation de Moscou en Russie, à l'Université d'Helsinki en Finlande et au Forschungszentrum Jülich. Il a ensuite été doctorant à l'Institut Max Planck pour la dynamique des systèmes techniques complexes à Magdebourg et a obtenu son doctorat à la faculté de mathématiques de l'université Otto von Guericke de Magdebourg en 2015. Au cours de ses études doctorales, il a également effectué un séjour de recherche au Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences à New York. Entre 2014 et 2021, il a été associé de recherche à la Technische Universität Berlin avant d'occuper un poste de professeur suppléant W3 à l'Universität Hamburg de 2019 à 2021. Nommé professeur assistant avec tenure track à UniDistance Suisse en 2021, Matthias Voigt est titulaire du titre de professeur extraordinaire depuis janvier 2026.
