Michael Kurschilgen est professeur assistant à UniDistance Suisse depuis 2022, après avoir travaillé à l'Université technique de Munich et à l'Institut Max-Planck de Bonn. Il a obtenu son doctorat en 2013 dans le cadre d'une école doctorale Max-Planck en sciences économiques à l'université de Jena. Il a effectué des séjours de recherche à l'université de Stanford, à l'UC Berkeley, à l'université du Michigan, à l'EUI de Florence et à l'université de Bologne.
Ses thèmes de recherche se situent à l’interface entre l’économie, la psychologie et le droit. Dans ses recherches, le professeur Kurschilgen combine la théorie microéconomique comportementale avec des expériences en laboratoire et sur le terrain, ainsi que d'autres approches empiriques. Son travail montre, entre autres, que les droits de propriété sont plus sûrs lorsque la redistribution est obligatoire (plutôt que volontaire) ; et que le besoin humain de reconnaissance sociale est une raison majeure pour laquelle les citoyens et citoyennes peuvent faire confiance aux recommandations expertes des scientifiques.
