Après avoir fait des détours par le journalisme et la didactique de l'histoire, Bernhard C. Schär a obtenu son doctorat à l'Université de Berne en 2013. Son premier livre, « Tropenliebe », a été publié en 2015, puis adapté au théâtre et a servi de base à un film documentaire.
De 2014 à 2021, il a été maître-assistant à la chaire d'histoire mondiale de l'ETH Zurich, où il a notamment dirigé son premier groupe de recherche « Swiss Tools of Empires » sur l'histoire des mercenaires suisses dans l'armée coloniale néerlandaise au XIXe siècle.
En 2021, il a été Marie Skłodowska Curie Fellow au Käte Hamburger Kolleg « global dis:connect » de l'université LMU de Munich.
En 2022, il est devenu professeur FNS-Eccellenza à l'université de Lausanne, où il a dirigé le groupe de recherche international « A collaborative History of Global Switzerland ».
Depuis le 1er décembre 2025, il est titulaire de la chaire d'histoire moderne et contemporaine à la FernUni Schweiz.
Bernhard C. Schär a accepté des invitations à Berlin, Singapour, Leyde, Paris et Munich, et a effectué des séjours de recherche au Sri Lanka, en Indonésie, en Afrique du Sud, au Lesotho et au Brésil.
Ses recherches ont non seulement fait l'objet de nombreuses publications scientifiques, mais ont également été largement relayées dans les médias et ont inspiré diverses expositions.
Son projet de livre actuel s'intitule « Pluralizing Europe. A Swiss History of Empires » (Pluraliser l'Europe. Une histoire suisse des empires).
Bernhard’s research interests span a range of topics including empire and science, colonial armies, imperial masculinities, racism, and the 19th-century Protestant mission movement. Initially grounded in the interconnected realms of the Dutch South-East Asian empire, the Netherlands, and its European hinterland, his research has recently shifted focus. He now employs Switzerland’s historical integration into various imperial formations during the 19th century as a framework for exploring new transimperial histories of Europe.
