This project develops and evaluates conversational AI tutors designed to support learning in online education. By using evidence-based learning strategies and guided questioning, the tool encourages deeper understanding and longer-lasting memory. The long-term goal is to create a scalable AI learning assistant that can support students across a wide range of university courses.

Conversational AI has the potential to make online learning more interactive and effective by encouraging students to actively engage with course material. Our project develops and evaluates AI tutors that use evidence-based learning strategies, including guided questioning inspired by the Socratic method, to promote understanding and long-term memory. We will investigate how different AI tutoring approaches influence student learning and engagement in distance education. In the long term, the project aims to create a scalable tool that can support teaching and learning across a wide range of university courses.
