How to avoid questionable research practices

The current academic system rewards speed over quality and rankings over transparency, thus encouraging questionable research practices up to scientific fraud. As a result, the lack of reproducibility of scientific results in numerous disciplines is alarmingly high. In this lecture I will give some recent examples of studies that show indications of being fabricated or otherwise unreliable. I will then describe some methods to identify problematic studies and outline strategies how to improve matters.

Prof. Dr. Leonhard Held

Leonhard Held is Full Professor of Biostatistics at the University of Zurich (UZH), where he heads the Biostatistics Department, directs the Master Program in Biostatistics, and leads the Center for Reproducible Science. He earned his Ph.D. from LMU Munich in 1997, with research stays at the University of Washington and academic positions at Imperial College London and Lancaster University before returning to Munich as Associate Professor. Since 2006, he has been a faculty member at UZH. An active editor for major journals including the Annals of Applied Statistics, his research focuses on reproducibility, infectious disease analysis, and Bayesian biostatistics, with significant contributions to spatial epidemiology.
